As of today, April 18, Doreen Fickel, a member of Altrusa International of Martinsville-Henry County, Inc. has made just shy of 175 masks. All have been handed out to those in the Martinsville-Henry County, Virginia, areas that need them. Doreen explains, it all started when a nurse, who works with the COVID-19 wing at a local nursing home, asked Doreen to make some for her so that her N95 mask would last longer. Doreen answered the call. Masks have been distributed to nurses at nursing home, the hospital, dentist offices, restaurant workers, bankers, family, friends and anyone who asked for one. In true Altrusa fashion, Doreen says, “I am not looking for recognition or anything. Just trying to do my small part to help my community. Take care and be safe.”
